Fifth Former Flik Feng will spend his first week of the holidays working with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as a student on their ‘Very Young Composers Workshop’.

Flik was one of just ten talented young composers (out of around 1000) who won a place on this prestigious week-long workshop in Shanghai. The two world-class orchestras will come together for the ‘Music in the Summer Air’ (MISA) concert in the first week of July. During the week Flik will work with Artistic Director, Jon Deak, and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Teaching Artists, as well as musicians from the New York Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. The workshop will culminate in the two orchestras performing Flik’s composition at the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Hall.

Flik’s winning composition is a piano trio, which he composed with the help of the school’s Logic software. Flik started composing music when he was in Y7, when he was introduced to Logic and Sibelius in Music Technology. However, he has always had a strong music background; achieving the ABRSM Diploma in Piano, Grade 8 in singing (Flik is a member of our Chapel Choir) and is just starting to learn the flute. Flik also uses his keyboard skills well as one of the school’s chapel organists.

We wish Flik all the very best in Shanghai and look forward to hearing all about his experience when he returns for the Sixth Form in September to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Music at A-Level.
