Colts Squad – Cambridge Winter Head2Head
First win of 2016 but an eventful day on the river!
Excellent conditions on Saturday 23 January 2016 and a promising first race saw the squad take 1st position in Men's Novice eights by a good margin. Their time of 14:36 placed them ahead of all but one of the College 2nd VIIIs, and also 27 seconds in front of the J18 winners.
Sadly, after such a promising start to the day, problems with the rudder on our boat meant that our J18 combination failed to make it around the first bend in rather dramatic style. Jack Murphy's oar took most of the force of the ensuing collision with the bank and he was lifted into the water. Thankfully he was back in the boat in just a few seconds helped by the long arms of the 4 man. I am sure those spectators at the Plough must have wondered what was going on as the crew missed getting to them by about 50m. It was such a shame in every respect as our crew had already started to catch the crew in front which was our opposition in the J18 class.
Well done to the winning combination of: T. Ackroyd, G. Christian, S. Chambers, A. Davies, H. Cave, T. Christian, C. Sheridan, O. Mitchell, J. Emerson
Senior and J15 Squad – Eton Invitational Head
Both squads took advantage of the exeat weekend to arrive at Dorney lake early for a practice row before racing. They were rewarded with a perfectly flat lake, and the sessions were a great chance to work on some side-by-side rowing which cannot be reproduced back in Bedford.
As this was the first race of the season, both squads were racing in matched combinations. Given the strength of the opposition they were facing, this obviously had an impact on the speed of the crews. However, all four crews produced solid rows with pleasing results.
The senior crews finished 8th and 10th out of the 22 senior crews racing and the J15s finished 11th and 15th out of the 22 J15 crews racing.
All the crews will take heart from their performances and will start training hard in preparation for the next round of races in two weeks time at Peterborough and Hampton.
