OB Club Chairman’s Summer Garden Party

June 08 | 10:00 - 16:00

Old Bedfordian and Chairman of the OB Club, Craig Mitchell (64-74) and his wife, Krystyna, are kindly hosting an event which promises to be both entertaining and informative. Open to both local OBs and those from further afield - we do hope that partners will join us too!

The day will start at St. Albans Cathedral; the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried over 1,700 years ago. The present Cathedral was begun in 1077, using Roman bricks and flint from the ruined city of Verulamium. The building's amazing mixture of architectural styles bears witness to the many centuries of its life, first as a monastic Abbey and now as a Cathedral.

This also promises to be a fascinating opportunity to celebrate local heritage and culture by visiting St. Albans’ landmark Georgian Grade II Listed Town Hall and Courthouse which last year was transformed into a glorious state-of-the-art museum and art gallery. The museum/art gallery will also be hosting their biggest exhibition yet - featuring internationally-renowned artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth (the exhibition runs from 23 March to 8 September). Hepworth, who died aged 72 in 1975, is one of the few female artists of her time to achieve worldwide prominence. The exhibition is focused on the years 1948 to 1953 when Hepworth concentrated on capturing the human form across drawing and sculpture.

St Albans is packed with places to discover, explore, experience and enjoy so you will have time to stroll around the historic streets, unique buildings and market stalls.

The cost for the day will be £5 and includes a wander around St. Albans Cathedral, a visit to the new Museum and a drinks & alfresco buffet lunch reception at the Chairman’s home in St. Albans.
