DVP Devon and Cornwall Visit to Castle Drogo
Did you know that there is a link with Castle Drogo in Devon and Bedford School? The original owner who commissioned the building of the castle between 1911 and 1930, was Julius Drewe, the son of a local Bedfordshire vicar. Julius was educated at Bedford School, and went on to make his fortune by starting a chain of tea shops under the brand of “Home and Colonial Stores” which became the foundation for a number of retail brands that we still know today. If you would like to learn more about Julius Drewe, Castle Drogo and its amazing ongoing conservation project, then we hope that you will sign up for the 23rd September.
Many thanks to David Jones, our DVP for the region, who has organised this special visit to Castle Drogo. The format of the day will be as follows;
• 10.45am – Arrive and coffee in the Visitors Centre
• 11.30am – Commence guided tour of the castle
• 1pm – Lunch in the café
• 2pm – Free to explore the gardens and grounds independently
All OBs and their partners are most welcome (you do not have to live in Devon and Cornwall to attend!) The cost, without lunch, is £18.25 per head. This includes entry to the Castle and grounds (£10.25 group rate), £2 for the arrival coffee, £5 for the tour and £1 merchant's fee. National Trust Members will only have to pay £7 (plus 50p merchant's fee) in advance as they will of course get free entry as part of their annual membership. Please remember your membership cards.
Individuals will be able to buy their lunch separately, the idea being that people have the opportunity to catch up together over lunch and enjoy the grounds in the afternoon.
We hope that you will join us.
