Chairman’s Reception

June 09 | 10:00 - 16:00

Old Bedfordian and Chairman of the OB Club, Craig Mitchell (64-74) and his wife, Krystyna, are kindly hosting an event on Saturday, 9th June 2018. It is open to both local OBs and those from further afield and promises to be both entertaining and informative. We do hope that partners will join us too.

St. Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried over 1,700 years ago. The present Cathedral was begun in 1077, using Roman bricks and flint from the ruined city of Verulamium. The building's amazing mixture of architectural styles bears witness to the many centuries of its life, first as a monastic Abbey and now as a Cathedral. Its massive 11th century bell tower is the only remaining example of its type. It has the longest nave in England where you can see outstanding 13th and 14th century wall paintings. It contains the shrine of Saint Alban, which was rebuilt in the early 14th century.

This also promises to be a fascinating opportunity to see the results of an ambitious project to transform St. Albans’ landmark Georgian Grade II Listed Town Hall and Courthouse into a glorious state-of-the-art new museum and art gallery to celebrate local heritage and culture. This is, of course, subject to the grand opening going ahead on the 8th June 2018.

The cost for the day  will be £11 and the programme will run as follows:

10.00am -

Meet at the Abbot's Kitchen Café, which is temporarily located in a marquee on the south side of St Albans Cathedral. Please note that car parking will not be available on-site at the Cathedral apart from two parking spaces for disabled visitors.
