In today’s fast-changing world, entrepreneurial thinking is essential for success in any career path. Whether boys pursue corporate roles, academic research or launch their own ventures, they need to master skills such as design thinking, rapid prototyping and compelling storytelling. These capabilities do not just prepare them for business—they equip them to innovate, lead and make an impact in any field.
At Bedford School, we believe these skills should be nurtured early, and this commitment shines through in the opportunities we create for boys. Two standout initiatives—The Ivy House Award and Ready2Lead?—are helping shape our next generation of leaders.
The Ivy House Award – Leading Yourself Before Leading Others
This year’s Ivy House Award launched in style in October for our Lower Sixth cohort. Seventy pupils from Bedford School, Bedford Girls’ School, Mark Rutherford School and Biddenham International School began their Ivy House journey with enthusiasm and curiosity.
The programme’s central theme, “Before leading others, we must first lead ourselves”, encouraged pupils to reflect deeply on their own lives. Lower Sixth Formers Harrison and George, who completed the programme last year, shared personal insights that inspired honest conversations and open sharing among the group.
It was a powerful reminder that leadership starts with self-awareness, and we were proud to see so many young people embracing this challenge.
Ready2Lead? – Turning Ideas into Action
Leadership does not stop at reflection—it is also about action. That is why we are thrilled to host the Ready2Lead? programme, run by The Harpur Trust, right here at Bedford School.
More than 100 Lower Sixth pupils from nine local schools—including a strong Bedford School contingent—came together to explore leadership in practice. They heard from inspiring speakers such as Urban Judge (Youth TV) and Old Bedfordian Harry Beard, a successful entrepreneur, before diving into projects designed to tackle real-world challenges.
From ambitious goals to community-driven initiatives, these pupils are proving that leadership is about purpose, creativity and collaboration.
Building a Culture of Leadership and Innovation
Through programmes like Ivy House and Ready2Lead?, we are not just teaching leadership—we are creating changemakers. By combining entrepreneurial thinking with practical experience, boys are learning to lead with confidence and compassion, ready to make a difference in whatever path they choose.
