Sport at Bedford School

Monday 8 June 2026

Whether you’re new to the school or already know us well, this informal evening is a great way to meet our staff, explore our facilities and get a true feel for sport at Bedford.

Sport sits at the heart of a Bedford School education. Whether representing the school at the highest level or discovering a new activity for the first time, our aim is simple, to ensure every boy finds enjoyment, challenge and pride in taking part.

Our Discover Sport evening offers you the opportunity to see this in action.

What to Expect

During the evening, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Hear from Director of Sport Ian McGowan about our sporting vision and philosophy
  • Take part in a carousel of  practical experiences across our major sports
  • Chat with our heads of sport about pathways, scholarships, the breadth of our programmes.

Sport for All

We believe in sport for all, not just the few.

Every boy is encouraged to take part, regardless of experience or ability. Our programme is designed to ensure that:

  • All boys are involved regularly in competitive and co-curricular sport
  • There are opportunities to try a wide range of activities
  • Progression is supported at every level
  • From traditional team sports such as football, rugby, cricket and hockey, to activities like rowing, athletics, swimming, tennis and beyond, boys have the chance to explore, improve and find their passion.

With so much scope, every boy can find something he enjoys, whatever his ability. Indeed, many find themselves enjoying and excelling in a sport they would not otherwise have thought to try.

Elite Partnerships

Bedford partners with several elite clubs to foster sporting excellence within the school. Boys benefit from high-performance training and specialist coaching, enhancing the school’s provision with advanced skill development programmes, targeted sessions, and access to outstanding professional facilities beyond the school gates.

These clubs include:

  • Northampton Saints, one of England’s leading Premiership Rugby teams
  • Woburn Golf Club, a premier international championship venue
  • Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, a first-class team competing across all formats
Sport at Bedford

“Known for being sporty, the school plays rugby, cricket and hockey at a very competitive level with much cheering for the home side from the sidelines. But it’s not only core sports on offer. ‘There is every sport you can think of,’ the boys told us, including fives, rowing, water polo and golf.”

Talk Education

“….you name it and Bedford offers it, from archery or rifle shooting to Pilates and fencing.”

Good Schools Guide

“A fantastic number of current and ex-pupils compete at county and national level (former England cricket captain Sir Alastair Cook is an old boy); masterclasses and individual, top-level coaching are all available. The non-sporty are encouraged to have a go at everything with heaps of teams to support everyone.”
