On Friday 3 May, we collapsed our usual curriculum so Prep School boys could come together for a wonderful celebration of culture within our school community and the wider world.
Boys in Y3 to Y6 immersed themselves in drama, dance, music, art, games and DT to explore the culture of their assigned continent.
- Y3 focused on South America.
- Y4 delved into Oceania.
- Y5 explored Asia.
- Y6 centred their attention on Africa.
Working collaboratively in small groups, the boys created impressive fact files about countries on their continent. The boys then showcased their fact files during a Global Village event, where they presented them to another class a year above or below their own. It was an excellent opportunity to share all they had learned throughout the day. Boys also enjoyed tasting food for the continents they were exploring during the day.
Boys were also encouraged to wear clothes representing their national flag, cultural identity or traditional dress. This colourful and fascinating display highlighted and celebrated the rich cultural diversity within our community.
Meanwhile, Y7 and Y8 boys, in addition to drama, music, games and Global Village activities, participated in a Model United Nations (MUN) exercise. Their goal was to gain a deeper understanding of the United Nations’ work.
They researched their assigned countries’ positions on war, nuclear weapons, and armed conflict throughout the day. Using this information, they prepared position speeches on ‘How to Extend the Olympic Truce to Achieve Sustained Global World Peace.’
The boys collaborated brilliantly, combining their ideas to form a resolution. Negotiation, kindness, and teamwork were evident as they took on the roles of their countries’ ambassadors and presented their bloc’s resolution before voting.
Mrs Dale, the teacher behind the day, told us, “The day was a resounding success; the boys learnt a lot about themselves, shared their culture and explored cultures from around the world in a variety of ways, including politics. Many boys have since mentioned that they would be keen to take part in a Model UN club so this is something to look out for next year.”
