Week commencing 9 May 2016

In a week of mixed fortunes, the U15A bowed out of the Lord Taverners Cup despite a valiant battle against Bromsgrove, while the 1st XI saw a return to form against Oakham.

Our U15A faced a challenging match against Bromsgrove in the Lord’s Taverners Cup on Thursday 12 May 2016.  With two such strong sides were drawn against each other so early in the competition, the match had the quality of a quarter final fixture. Bromsgrove batted exceptionally well with one player scoring 100 off just 60 balls. The boys kept plugging away with the ball and did very well to keep Bromsgrove to 270 in the 40 allotted overs. In order to reach the large target, Bedford needed to get a flying start and the promotion of Ross Denton up to open the innings was an inspired move as he hit the ball with great power to all parts of the ground and gave us the start we needed. Denton not only got the team off to a flyer, he went on to score a magnificent 95 and he really did deserve a 100. Rahul Sheemar also played beautifully to keep the Bedford in the game but at all times, we just needed two big overs, which never really came and eventually we were bowled out 40 short of the required total.

Saturday 14 May saw fixtures against Oakham and Oundle, which resulted in superb eight wins for the school’s teams.  Following their disappointing performance against Oakham last week, the 1st XI bounced back to winning ways in great style. Oundle won the toss and elected to bat and got off to an excellent start with both openers looking in good form as they cruised to 47-0 before a fine piece of fielding by will comfort led to a run out. This proved to be the turning point in the game as the Bedford bowlers continued to bowl in good areas and kept the Oundle batters under pressure. Shiv Jhala was again the chief wicket taker (4-40) and he was well supported by Elliot Wingfield (2-20) and Ben Slawinski (1-8 off 8 overs). The Bedford bowlers eventually dismissed Oundle for 132 and set about chasing the total down. Jake Duxbury got the team off to a great start hitting 21 off 15 balls, however one shot too many saw him caught at mid-on. Despite losing 3 further wickets, a stead (and re-assuring) 42 not out be Emilio Gay got Bedford across the winning line by 6 wickets.

Special mention must also go to the Bedford 4th XI who faced Bloxham School, not only for a really good game played in an excellent spirit but also thanks to Kieran Duxbury from Year 11 and to Ben Moule and George Neave who turned out at an hour's notice despite not having played cricket since the Prep School.
