Pupils from Bedford School, Bedford Girls’ School, Bedford Modern, Biddenham, Bedford Academy, Sharnbrook and Mark Rutherford gained a great insight into ‘Careers in Art’ on Friday 1 December.

The careers evening, dedicated to the creative arts, offered an eye opening introduction to the range and sheer number of careers available within the industry. In 2014, 2.8 million jobs existed in the UK’s creative economy, which equates to one out of eleven of all jobs in the UK. In this same year, the creative industries grew by 8.9%, almost double the UK economy as a whole.

Pupils and their parents heard from range of speakers from many different fields within the arts and culture sector, who shared their professional expertise and experience and took questions. Speakers included Book Illustrators, a ‘Keeper of Collections’, a Director of Architects, a rather famous TV Auctioneer, a Gallery Owner, a Design Manager and a Freelance Artist whose job it was to paint the dots on Damien Hirst’s paintings!

Those who attended the evening came away excited that pursuing career in art makes not only sound financial sense but also offers numerous, exciting avenues and opportunities to stretch their creative talents.
