Lower Sixth Former Alex Watson was recently selected as one of the 32 finalists in the Young Composers’ Competition. This prestige competition awards and recognises talented young composers from across the world. This year, over 2000 composers under the age of 25 entered an orchestral score which means Alex’s finalist position places him into the top 2% in the world. Quite an incredible achievement considering the age span.

Below is a recording of Alex’s piece; ‘Judas mercator pessimus’ as performed by Voces8 last summer on the school’s consort choir trip to London.  The music is suitably dark for the text.

Alex has been composing music for around three years and also studies at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance every Saturday.  At school he is studying Music, Music Tech, English and German at A-Level and is currently looking at music universities to attend after sixth form.

We wish Alex all the best with his writing and music career. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy Alex’s piece.
