Memories of the School

Community OB Club

The history of Bedford School lives not only in its buildings and archives but in the vivid memories of those who walked its halls. Through the retelling of stories – on the cricket pitch, in the classroom, or during OB reunions – the spirit of the school is kept alive. Each story shared, whether humorous or heartfelt, weaves into the collective memory of the community, ensuring that the traditions, values, and friendships formed at Bedford continue to resonate across generations.

Archives

We are proud of our history. We have given an unbroken service to education since 1552 and our traditions still influence the way we work today…

Founded in the reign of Edward VI, our school owes its existence to the generosity of Sir William and Dame Alice Harpur. Their charitable grant of land and finance became the Harpur Trust, and their vision continues through our scholarships and bursaries.

This fully searchable archive is a collection of all kinds of material dating back as far as the 1850s, and includes magazines, registers, photographs, books, newsletters and other memorabilia.
If you have any queries and want to find out more about the School Archive please contact archives@bedfordschool.org.uk.

We welcome OBs who would like to return to the school and visit. For safeguarding reasons, we ask that you prebook your visit with the team in the OB office. obclub@bedfordschool.org.uk

Reminiscences

OBs share reminiscences of their school days. Tales of hidden motor vehicles, illicit drinking, inspirational magic lantern shows, obligatory cold plunge baths and the introduction of ‘pop music’, have kept us all amused.

If you’d like to share your reminiscences and help us create a unique insight into the life of the school, please get in touch at obclub@bedfordschool.org.uk, adding ‘Reminiscences’ to the subject line.

Did You Know?

We bring you fascinating, lesser-known facts and stories about our OBs. From an acting legend honoured on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and who played cricket for the Hollywood Cricket Club alongside many Hollywood greats, to an OB who was the inspiration for a character in a popular video game, and many more…

Photos Brought to Life

Using the latest software, we have brought some old black and white photos to life by colourising them. We have added a selection below for your enjoyment (click on photos to enlarge), but to see more sign up to Eagle Connect where you will be able to see them in the ‘Photos’ section.

If you have any you would like us to add or colourise for you, please email us at obclub@bedfordschool.org.uk.
