Community Expertise at Its Best: Inside the 2026 Careers Convention

What a week it’s been! We’ve just finished this year’s OB Club Careers Convention, and it may well have been our best yet. For more than two decades, this event has been a standout moment in the school calendar, and since moving online in 2020, it has only grown – reaching more pupils and welcoming contributors from across the globe, from Denmark and Germany to South Africa.

This year, we extended the invitation to 23 schools across the Borough, with over 220 pupils signing up to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. Over three consecutive evenings, we hosted 12 online sessions designed to inform and inspire pupils as they consider their future careers.

We were honoured that more than 65 members of our community including OBs, parents, past parents, and teachers gave their time and expertise to deliver these sessions. Pupils heard from professionals working in financial services, law, engineering, science, consultancy, media, computer science, medicine, architecture, the creative arts, and more.  It was wonderful to have contributors that came from a broad spectrum of large well known multinational companies (e.g. Deloitte, IBM, BAE, Bain etc) through to smaller local companies

It was a rare chance to hear directly from those at the top of their fields about the skills and qualifications needed to succeed, as well as what day‑to‑day life in their roles looks like. Equally valuable were the insights from those earlier in their careers, who shared how they navigated their first steps and what helped them stand out when securing that all‑important first opportunity.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed their time this week to inspire and guide the next generation as they prepare to leave full‑time education and begin their own career journeys.

If you would like to take part next year, we would love to hear from you. Please contact the OB Club at obclub@bedfordschool.org.uk.
