Coding Week – Ready, Set, Code!

Coding Week – Ready, Set, Code!

Coding Week offers an excellent opportunity for all boys, whether confident coders or not, to explore the world of coding – and we are pleased to say that boys of all ages jumped at the opportunity.

Our Y3 and Y4 boys enjoyed an excellent assembly from Mrs Carrington, in which she introduced them to coding, explaining coding as a computer language and binary code being simply on or off, and helped the boys understand the fundamentals of coding using the if…then…conditional statements. The boys then tested their newfound knowledge with a game called ‘if…then…’ to see if they could follow her instructions (they could).

Coding Week was also the perfect time to launch our new Y3 Lego Coding Club – you can read more about this here.

Our Digital Leaders also ran coding sessions from Wednesday to Friday at lunchtime. In the fun sessions, boys could try their hand at Microbit and physical computing, coding in Python and Scratch, and creating programs incorporating AI to enable machine learning – the theme of Coding Week this year. Our favourite coding project of the week was the creation of an alien language! Thanks to the boys’ brilliant efforts and excellent teaching skills, even more boys finished the week excited by the opportunities coding offers.

Boys across different year groups also had the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of coding activities during Tutor time. From Rodocodo for Y3, Pirate Plunder for Y4, Dance Party: AI Edition for Y5, Poem Art for Y6, CoderZ for Y7, to Dungeons of Kithgard for Y8, there was something for everyone.

“Coding Week offers a wonderful opportunity for every boy to have fun exploring the digital world and to feel safe and comfortable. For those with even greater focus and interest, it is an opportunity for them to really fly—and I am pleased to say they truly do! At Bedford Prep we recognise we must prepare boys for the future, a future which is increasingly digitised. So, in line with our strategic focus in this area, our educational offering builds skills to complement its requirements.”
