The school has been buzzing with excitement and anticipation as boys have thrown themselves into the fascinating world of Science in British Science Week. This year’s theme, ‘Change and Adapt’, inspired a variety of engaging activities, all led by our enthusiastic Upper boys. Their dedication and passion for Science made them exceptional role models for our younger Prep boys, showcasing the power of peer-led learning and mentorship.
Upper Boys Leading the Way

A highlight of the week has seen the Upper boys delivering a series of Science-themed enrichment talks to our Prep boys. It was heart-warming to see the older boys step into leadership roles, sharing their knowledge and igniting a spark of curiosity in their younger peers. These sessions not only provided valuable learning experiences but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration across different age groups.
Hands-On Science Activities

The boys have immersed themselves in a range of hands-on Science activities. This week, the Floreat boys undertook the challenging task of infecting saplings with Tobacco Mosaic Virus. Despite the complexity of the protocol, the boys executed it with precision and enthusiasm. Over the next seven days, they will monitor the plants for signs of infection using molecular biology techniques such as ELISA, gel electrophoresis and PCR. This practical experience is invaluable, giving them a taste of real-world scientific research.
Lower Sixth boys led two interactive presentations on evolution and natural selection, and exothermic and endothermic reactions for Prep School boys. The sessions were both informative and engaging, helping younger boys understand complex scientific concepts through interactive learning.
Additionally, Lower Sixth boys led planaria dissections with Year 9, 10 and 11 boys providing insights into stem cell regeneration.

In the Great Hall, our Sixth Form physicists set up a 10-metre long pendulum to measure the acceleration due to gravity in Bedford and to observe the rotation of the Earth. This ambitious experiment is a testament to their dedication and scientific curiosity.
Exploring the Night Sky
Astronomer in Residence, Mr Guise added an astronomical dimension to celebrations when he hosted a show in the planetarium to illustrate changes in the night sky and sparking interest in the wonders of our universe.
Science Competitions and Awards
Six Lower Sixth boys recently showcased their research and presentation skills in the prestigious Bedford School Talalay Science Prize. Their written reports and oral presentations were judged on originality, creativity and communication skills by a panel of esteemed judges, including the Heads of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, the Head of Science and the Head Master.
The preparation and delivery of the Talalay presentations provided an outstanding opportunity for the boys to delve into areas of academic interest and develop essential communication skills. This experience will undoubtedly serve them well in their future careers.
All in all, British Science Week has been an inspirational experience, thanks to the leadership and enthusiasm of all boys involved. Upper School boys’ efforts have not only enriched the scientific knowledge of our younger boys but have also set a shining example of what it means to be a role model. As we continue to celebrate the wonders of Science, we look forward to seeing the lasting impact of these initiatives on our school community.
