One OB has proved that sometimes entering competitions can be worth your while. After stumbling across a ‘Groupon’ competition to train with the Barbarians and deciding to give it a go, Jack Goldberg (09-11) promptly forgot all about it, until he received a call at work reminding him that not only had he entered, but that he’d won it!

Three weeks later, Jack was on his way to Latymer Upper playing fields with two of his university friends, to meet the Barbarians in person. As Jack tells us, the lucky young men enjoyed “the opportunity to watch a light training session for the press in the build up to the Argentina match at Twickenham, play a small game of touch, compete in a 60m sprint in which Pat Lambie, the current South Africa Flyhalf/ Fullback ran against us and generally…speak to the players a little.”

To conclude the day, the friends were then invited out for a meal at a restaurant in Knightsbridge with the team, an experience many would envy. Sitting opposite Stephen Moore, the Australian Hooker and Captain who led his side to the 2015 RWC final, Jack also got a further chance to speak to a number of players including Michael Cheika, the Australian coach and Barbarians coach for this, their 125th year tour. See the photo above of Jack with some of the men after the meal, sandwiched in between the formidable pair of Botha and Victor Matfield. We greatly enjoy the height difference!

Following the day, Jack also received three signed Baa-Baas’ jerseys in the post and speaks very highly of his time with the Barbarians, saying “It was really enjoyable experience and a good insight into the highest level of international rugby players.”
