The Bedfordshire Schools Boys Golf Championship at Millbrook Golf Course on Monday 23 March proved to be a day to remember. For the first time in 11 years, Bedford School lifted the Bedfordshire Schools Team Handicap title, and for the first time ever, the honour belonged to the Prep School.
This landmark victory, previously achieved only by senior teams, ended a long run of senior Bedfordshire schools dominance and marks a proud and historic moment for the Prep School. The team will now go on to represent the school at the National Schools Final at Woodhall Spa in July, a tremendous achievement.
The scoring opened with Jack G, who got off to a superb start on the front nine, recording seven pars and scoring 20 points. He continued his strong form on the back nine, finishing in style with an excellent par on the 18th hole to post an impressive 35 points.
Next up was Jack N, who also made a confident start on the front nine, again scoring 20 points. He showed great composure late in his round, producing a fantastic par save on the 17th hole before finishing with a strong total of 37 points.
In the penultimate group, Ernest delivered an outstanding round. He collected 21 points on the front nine, including a crucial bogey save on the tricky par five 8th hole. After narrowly missing a birdie opportunity on the 10th, Ernest regrouped superbly, finishing strongly over the final seven holes to post an excellent 40 points.
With the best two scores counting towards the team total, the depth and consistency of the Prep School squad was clear, as any combination of the three players’ scores would have secured the victory.
The Prep School posted a winning team score of 77 points, finishing six points clear of Redborne Upper School.
Individually, Ernest finished second overall in the Net competition, missing out on first place by just one point, with Jack N finishing third and Jack G close behind in fourth.
Completing a remarkable day for Bedford School, the Senior School team secured the Gross title, ensuring that both teams progress to Woodhall Spa for the National Schools Finals.
A fantastic achievement for all involved and a proud moment for Bedford School as a whole. Roll on Woodhall Spa.
