We are excited to announce that Upper Sixth Former Alex Lamb has reached the finals of the Pupil Library Assistant of the Year Awards (PLAA). This prestigious award, now in its twelfth year, celebrates the outstanding contributions of pupil librarians across the UK and is run by the School Libraries Group of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP SLG) and the School Library Association (SLA).

Alex, who was nominated by Miss Chatley, Library and Information Manager, demonstrated excellence in various areas, including serving as a role model to other boys. Entries were judged by a panel from the children’s book world and school library community to recognise the pupil librarians’ significant impact on their schools and themselves.
Talking of his joy at being a finalist, Alex told us, “I was shocked and surprised that I’d made it but was very happy overall. Helping to ensure that the library runs smoothly so that everyone can get the most out of it has been my favourite part of being a student librarian. The whole library team have been very helpful, especially Mrs Shirley, who is always there to answer my questions. The library is a calm space where I can work or relax and read away from the bustle of school life as well as being a place for research and enjoying a wide range of books.”
Barbara Band, Chair of the PLAA Judging Panel, praised this year’s nominees for their dedication and diverse contributions, from administrative tasks to creating inclusive library spaces. Meanwhile, Chantel Carpenter, Director of Schools Marketing at Pearson, highlighted the importance of libraries in fostering a love of reading and congratulated all nominees.
The winners will be announced by children’s author and comedian, Russell Kane, at an awards ceremony hosted by Pearson in London on Tuesday 25 March.
We wish Alex the best of luck in the finals!
