Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
We are a proudly diverse and inclusive community at Bedford School and are committed to creating a welcoming and respectful environment where every member of our school community feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Values and Mission
Our core values of Curiosity, Responsibility, Endeavour, Integrity and Kindness ensure equality, diversity and inclusion is embedded in our ethos. We believe firmly that diversity supports our mission to teach boys to think intelligently, act wisely and be fully engaged in a challenging and changing world.
“We are absolutely committed to embedding kindness and a culture where every single pupil is valued.”
James Marriott, Senior Boarding Housemaster
Pupil Societies and Events
As a boarding and day school we have pupils and staff from over 30 different nationalities and celebrate the diversity of thought and experience this brings.
We have several cultural societies that allow inclusive and supportive spaces for pupils to discuss issues linked to their identity, faith and heritage, and share their perspectives with the school community. Societies include an African-Caribbean Society, Islamic Society, a Christian Union, and a LGBT+ Allies Society.
Our societies host a range of speakers, lead assemblies and organise events such as for Neurodiversity Celebration Week, LGBT+ History Month, and Black History Month.
We have an annual Culture Day where we embrace and showcase the rich tapestry of cultures within our community.
Pupil and Staff Voice
In the Prep School, boys take leadership roles as ‘Global Citizens’ and in the Upper School they can be ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors’. Through their work, community research, staff forums and School Council we regularly review progress against our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, supported by our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Link Governor.
Each year we make changes to our policies, curriculum, co-curriculum, staff training and recruitment processes, and our community engagement as we strive to ensure a deep sense of belonging and celebration of difference for all within the school and its wider community. We recognise this work is ongoing and remain committed to improving all the time.
