Last Friday, five keen Computer Science boys visited Stowe School to compete in one of the regional competitions for the VEX V5 robotics competition. It was the school’s first time entering this event, and the experience gained was invaluable.
The boys showed incredible resilience throughout the competition as they faced numerous challenges, making field repairs and modifications to keep their robot in the game. Their creativity, problem-solving skills and determination were truly inspiring as they adapted and improved on the fly, making changes to the robot’s engineering and functionality, as well as its code.
Success can be measured in various ways, and often, the journey of overcoming obstacles is a triumph in itself. Our boys gained invaluable insights from observing other teams, created prototypes, rigorously tested them, and implemented their discoveries in the competition arena. By analysing their performance, pinpointing areas for improvement and returning to the drawing board, they enhanced the robustness of their robot.
As Albert Einstein once said, “The only source of knowledge is experience.” This perfectly encapsulates the boys’ journey of learning and growth through this hands-on experience.
The next competition is on 9 February, and the boys are already working on a new “version 2” robot based on everything they learned.
