‘Making Art in the First World War: Picasso, Matisse and friends’

Although Paris was only 100 kilometres from the front-line this lecture will explore the work of artists including Picasso and Matisse who, despite the inescapable presence of the war, attempted to keep alive the expanded possibilities opened up for the arts of painting and sculpture in Paris between 1911 and 1914. It will be argued that making art for these artists on the home-front  became a reparative response to the mechanized destructive forces released on the Somme or Verdun.   Professor Christopher Green from the Courtauld Institute is curator of the exhibition ‘Cubism and War’ which opened at the Museo Picasso in Barcelona in October.
