The Charles Piazzi Smyth Community Observatory

Bedford School Observatory

The Piazzi Smyth Observatory and Wolfson Planetarium, which were opened in 2002, provide an important resource in the teaching of Astronomy. Sited on the School estate, the Observatory and Planetarium are operated by the School in conjunction with members of the Bedford Astronomical Society.

The main 5m Observatory dome houses a 16” computer controlled telescope which gives remarkable views of the Moon, planets and deep sky objects. The Resource Room includes a 4m Planetarium Dome and Star Projector and was funded by The Wolfson Foundation.

The facilities are available for use by schools and community groups free of charge. If you would like to discuss making a booking please contact the Bedford School Astronomer-in-Residence, Linton Guise, at lguise@bedfordschool.org.uk
