Boarding and Day School for boys aged 7 - 18 years

Supporting Schools

Bedford School offers a varied programme of Workshops, Lectures, Visiting Coaches, Referees and INSET days.

Bedford has long recognised the importanced of working together; sharing resources, facilities and knowledge for the benefit of the whole school and wider community. We aim to offer a variety of opportunities for groups of staff and students to visit us and for schools to invite a member of our teaching staff to visit and participate in their own school events and curriculum. With this in mind, we have developed a programme that we can offer to schools, including: Sport, Music, Academic, Extra-Curricular and INSET.

The Chemistry Around Us!

So much of the world around us depends on chemistry and we don’t realise it.

From the reactions of oxygen that make iron rust and humans respire to the metals that form the colour of fireworks and precious gems; chemistry is part of our life and the world in which we live. Chemistry is responsible for the materials we use and the many industrial processes used to make them, the colours we see, the fuels we use, the processes of life and of death, the cause of much pollution and the solution to these problems. The purpose of this lecture is to explore the chemistry behind many aspects of the modern world. This lecture aims to entertain as well as challenge, and has plenty of colour, bangs and explosions along the way. You should leave wanting to find out more about what role chemistry has in your lives. The lecture is delivered by Mr Stuart Knight, Head of Chemistry at Bedford School, ably assisted by members of his department.

Next lecture: Tuesday 11th February 2014

Bedford has a long established reputation in sport and we are proud of our success in this field. We have therefore set up further sporting initiatives available to schools including:

Match Officials

Provision of experienced match officials for Rugby, Hockey and Football.

INSET for members of your teams and their coaches – Rugby, Cricket and Hockey.

Taster Days

Packages where your boys might experience a number of sports that might normally be inaccessible to them.

Host Matches

Our grounds might provide the opportunity for your school to compete against other schools not normally within convenient geographical range – Rugby, Hockey, Cricket and possibly others.

Following the success of our Prep School 6-a-side cricket tournament, we will be hosting this competition once again in 2014. Further details will follow in due course.

The standard of music at Bedford School is extremely high and we pride ourselves on the fact that a large proportion of our students learn to play one or more instruments.

Every year there is a full programme of performances, including a weekly recital in the Music School Recital Hall. If you would like to attend any of our concerts, please contact us and we will add your details to our invitations database.

School Competitions

We would be delighted for a member of our music department to act as a judge at one of your school competitions, please contact us to find out more.

Performances in Schools

We would welcome the opportunity to perform in your school, our orchestras and ensembles include: Chamber Orchestra, School Band, Dance Band, Chapel Choir

Composition Days

We offer talented musicians the opportunity to work with our very own Composer in Residence. During the workshop pupils learn about composing their own music as well as matching music to themes and performance skills.

The Art School provides an exciting set of studios for painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture, as well as an Art library and lecture theatre / computer suite.

Art -
Summer 2014

The Art INSET is ideal for teachers from preparatory schools, providing a day of workshops aiming to give Art teachers advice, ideas and practical experience in drawing and mixed media, printmaking and sculpture as well as sharing good practice.

(Next Art INSET: Wednesday 4th June 2014)

Bedford School is fortunate to have its own Observatory and Planetarium located on the School campus. They are operated by the School’s Astronomer in conjunction with members of the Bedford Astronomical Society.

Observatory & Planetarium

The Observatory is named in honour of Charles Piazzi Smyth OB and encompasses the main 5m dome housing a Meade LX200 16” computer controlled telescope which gives stunning views of the moon, planets and deep sky objects. Several portable telescopes ranging from 6” to 13” are also used from the outside observation deck.

The adjacent Wolfson Planetarium houses a 4m dome and star projector which are used to produce detailed views of the night sky throughout the year. This provides an excellent introduction to Astronomy, even on cloudy nights.

We would be delighted to welcome your school group to visit. Demand is very high for these evenings and therefore we recommend booking early to ensure availability.

Visiting Speakers

The Head Master, Mr John Moule, our School Chaplain, Reverend Shaun Atkins, and other members of our School teaching staff would be delighted to visit your school to preach in Chapel or take an assembly.
