HM the Queen honours OBís service

Old Bedfordian John Hall Spencer (42-45) has been awarded the OBE in recognition of over 40 years’ Services to Business, Charity and London Youth, receiving his award from HM the Queen in December during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

John, who set up his own enterprises after 21 years with advertising giant JWT, has been a mentor to the Metropolitan Police for the past five years, and a Trustee Director for over 40 years for London Youth, formerly known as the Old Boys Clubs, where HRH Prince Philip has been very involved as Patron for over 60 years. Accepting his award from Her Majesty, John joked that he had been ‘hanging on to Prince Philip’s coat-tails.' During his time with London Youth John was also responsible for five years for a range of sports, including boxing, football, athletics and cricket. London Youth is now a vibrant network of 400 community organisations serving young people and their families in every London borough.

In an interesting twist, Bedford School was itself one of the founding members of the original Old Boys Clubs established in the 19th century by many public schools in deprived areas of London. Bedford’s club was on the Harpur Estate in London’s Holborn.
