The Science department is situated on the first floor of the Wells Building with three well-equipped laboratories, prep room and store. There is a very good working relationship with the Upper School Science Departments and our long term goal is to provide all pupils with the best possible preparation to GCSE and beyond. Boys have opportunities to visit the observatory and planetarium which are situated on the School estate.
In Years 3 and 4 Science is generally taught by the class teacher. Each class is timetabled to use a laboratory and this helps in our desire to make Science a hands-on activity. From Year 5 upwards Science is taught by one of our specialist teachers.
The whole approach to teaching Science emphasises the balance between knowledge and skills. Pupils develop the knowledge and understanding specified by the National Curriculum and frequently go well beyond this. Science also provides excellent opportunities for pupils to develop their thinking skills. For a number of years we have been taking part in the CASE project (Cognitive Advancement through Science Education). This is a national scheme designed to use Science as a medium to develop higher order thinking skills which provides benefits throughout the curriculum.
We are trying to develop in our pupils:
• problem solving
