French is taught in the Prep School from Year 3 upwards, with Spanish, Latin and German being introduced in Year 7 as part of the language carousel. Following a taster of each language, boys may express a preference of a second language to study in Year 8 alongside French.
Modern Languages are taught by specialist teachers, including two native speakers. There are four specialist teaching rooms in the Prep School and we benefit from excellent resources to enhance pupils’ learning. The MFL department is proud to offer boys the opportunity to use a language laboratory to consolidate listening skills and for oral practice. Our department recognises and embraces the use of ICT as an important learning tool and we have created an extensive bank of resources on the School’s eLearning site which boys and parents may access remotely.
The aim of the MFL department is to provide boys with the knowledge, skills and self-assurance to converse fluently and confidently in the foreign language. Equal emphasis is placed on the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and we use a wide range of teaching and learning styles to make the lessons enjoyable and motivating for our pupils.
We wholeheartedly believe that subject related trips and visits are an integral part of maintaining pupils’ enthusiasm for learning a language, as well as exposing them to authentic linguistic opportunities. We therefore put in place a number of events targeted at specific year groups, which are appropriate to their age and ability.
The annual Year 3 & 4 French day provides boys with the opportunity to enjoy an authentic French breakfast and participate in a wide range of cultural and linguistic activities whilst on school premises. Year 5 boys are offered a traditional French lunch, followed by more challenging language based exercises. We run trips to the Europa Centre for Modern Languages for a variety of age groups and every year, a residential trip is organised for boys in Years 7 & 8. These have always been a great success and previous visits include four day stays to Paris, Barcelona, Innsbruck and Etaples.
