Eagle House

Keep up to date with life at Eagle House:

Location

Eagle House is the boarding house for the Preparatory School. Opened in 1993, by Bedford Old Boy Martin Bayfield, the purpose built extension to a Victorian House on De Parys Avenue provides modern, comfortable accommodation for up to 32 boys whose ages range from 7 to 13. The house is a short distance from the Prep School on site allowing the boarders easy access to the School and to the many facilities available there.

The House

Eagle House TripThe House is purpose built, containing all the comforts of home and with excellent facilities. The aim is to provide a warm supportive environment where every boy is able to feel secure, and is able to flourish and develop as an individual as well as learning to live as part of a larger group.

The boys are accommodated in well furnished dormitories. Each dormitory has its own bathroom and toilets close by with additional showers available on the lower floor. On the ground floor there is a spacious lounge in which the boarders can relax, watch television, read or play board games. They also have access to computers which link the House to the School’s extensive network enabling the boys to use the internet, under supervision, and send and receive emails and use the School’s own software. There is a quiet area available to the boys where they can have privacy whilst making phone calls. Each boarder has his own work area in the prep room. After school finishes the boarders will have a drink and a biscuit before settling down to do their prep. Prep is always supervised by at least one member of academic staff, usually more, and is checked and signed. The House has an excellent games room and is well resourced with: an XBox 360, PS 2, Nintendo 64, pool table, air hockey machine, table tennis table and table football. Next to the games room is a music practice room.

The boarders take all their main meals in the School Dining Halls. There is a dedicated kitchen in the house where the boys have supper, under supervision, in the evening. Supper usually includes a choice of fruit, cereals, toast, crumpets, noodles, toasties depending on the day of the week. On Saturday evenings many of the boarders will have noodles or possibly a Chinese or pizza take away supplied by the House before settling down to watch a dvd in the lounge curled up in their duvets.

Boarding Life

During the week, on two evenings, the House has sole use of the School swimming pool for an hour and the sports hall on two evenings. Indoor football is usually the most popular activity with dodge ball, basketball, cricket and badminton also being played. The boys have access to the Prep School’s all weather area and will often be found there in the evenings or at weekends playing football, rugby, hockey etc. or flying around on their roller blades, skateboards or scooters. A hobbies room is available for the boys to work on special projects, make models or do some art work.

Many House competitions are organised throughout the year including table tennis, pool, chess, FIFA13 and air hockey. Bingo, quiz and beetle drive evenings are also enjoyed. A number of BBQs are held during the Summer Term and in the early part of the Autumn Term when the weather permits! One of highlight of the year is always the Eagle House Christmas Dinner to which the boys invite their tutors and in previous years have entertained them with poems, music, a pantomime as well as a visit from Father Christmas. After the entertainment the boys and staff take part in a karaoke session back at the House which is always good fun.

A number of activities are organised throughout the year. A trip to a London Theatre is undertaken during the Spring Term. During the Summer Term we have a three day trip away. This year the boys and staff had an excellent time in Shropshire with raft building, quad biking, mountain boarding and a day at Drayton Manor Theme Park. There are also regular Sunday afternoon outings including going to the cinema, high rope climbing, bowling, Whipsnade Zoo, go carting, water park and paintballing. Various sporting events are also enjoyed at Bedford Blues, Saracens, MK Dons and MK Lightening (ice hockey).
