AS and A Level courses
The Sixth Form Advanced Level course at Bedford is a strong option for boys wishing to follow the traditional pattern of subjects to Advanced Level and for many it is the natural choice. In the Lower Sixth Year most boys take four subjects to AS (Advanced Subsidiary) level and then, after examination at the end of that year, continue with three of these subjects to Advanced Level certification at the end of the Upper Sixth year. In addition, these boys enjoy a Skills programme, which includes the skills necessary for University life.
This course is attractive to those who wish to specialise after GCSE – in four subjects and then three. In particular it might suit the committed scientist who sees three sciences, and perhaps AS Level Maths or a language, as his future. Each A Level is separately certified, and so a weak performance in one area will not affect other subjects. Modules taken at AS Level in the Lower Sixth can be retaken subsequently to improve the grade, an attractive facility to many.
Advanced Level boys enjoy a wide range of sporting and service opportunities and attend a lecture programme with major speakers from outside the school. There are Private Study periods as well.
The courses offered include these listed subjects, of which one must be chosen from each block (but remember that the number of subjects usually reduces to three in the Upper Sixth)
