Boarding and Day School for boys aged 7 - 18 years

An Introduction

Bedford School Trust (BST) was established in 1926 to hold certain funds and property for the general benefit of Bedford School (as distinct from the Harpur Trust who own the School and other independent schools in Bedford). Since then BST has been developed into a valuable source of funding for Bedford School and those connected with it that is not dependent on fee income . Funding is available for a variety of purposes including building projects and the annual award of a number of scholarships. It also provides financial support for a number of School activities including the Chapel, the Combined Cadet Force and educational visits and sports tours.

Bedford School Trust became an incorporated company in June 2002 when it was registered in England. The new company was registered as a charity in October 2002. The assets were transferred to the new company on 30th November 2002. The Trust Deed has been replaced by Memorandum and Articles of Association. The company registers may be inspected at the Registered Office.

A Lasting Legacy

Bedford School Trust has just received a substantial legacy. This legacy is the gift of an Old Bedfordian, Mr Gordon Lindsay-White, who died in July 2009. The sum bequeathed to Bedford School Trust is expected to be approximately £2 million which is, obviously, an extremely generous gift.

Bedford School Trust is a separate entity from the Bedford Charity (The Harpur Trust). Its role is to manage funds and property donated to Bedford School so as to promote the education of pupils at the School, promote the further education of former pupils and to support the School and its charitable activities. It will be the task of the Trustees of Bedford School Trust to decide how best to use the fantastic opportunity presented by this unexpected asset in support of its charitable objects in order to enhance the life and work of the School in the broadest sense.

Mr Lindsay-White was born in Ceylon in 1914 and attended the School from 1922 – 1932. One of four brothers, he was in Bromham House and rowed in the 3rd V111. He was an accountant by profession although the family business was in rubber production in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Gordon Lindsay-White died aged 95 having spent his retirement locally. In due course, the School will commemorate his generosity in an appropriate and lasting manner.
