June / July 2010As a busy term ends, I am drawing a little breath and reflecting on the last few weeks of a very successful year. The President of the Old Bedfordians introduced me at the Reunion Day on Saturday July 3rd and thanked me for attending in what was such a busy time. He was right . . . but I did point out that the bulk of my time in the final days of term consisted of watching the School play cricket at Lords or rowing at Henley and listening to concert after concert of exceptional standard. There are times when the job is very rewarding! . . . |

May 2010Walking across the field into work in the morning becomes one of the highlights of the day at this time of year, and this last two weeks has seen it at its best. The hot weather will probably not last but it always lifts the spirits; there is that moment of symbolic shift in the year as the Vice Master announces the change in uniform, and the community breathes in that first sense of the Summer having arrived. . . . |

April 2010As the country gears up for next week's general election, I have to confess to being a little bit of a political ‘anorak', with wall-to-wall coverage being a personal godsend, particularly abstruse programming late at night exploring the finer points of policy and the campaign. I have, therefore, to take a reality check and realise that the vast majority of the population, Bedford School community included, probably take a different view and in so doing recognise that I must not overdo the encouragement of the boys to take a keen interest. But with a History and Politics teacher hat on, I do hope that the boys appreciate the increasing significance of what might happen on May 6th . . . . |
