Drama
The Drama department endeavours to empower the students in its charge with the knowledge and skills required to become effective members of a modern society. It also seeks to achieve excellence in all areas of academic and practical work through its curricular and extensive extra-curricular programme. Maximum participation from students, teachers and the wider community is actively encouraged.
Bedford School has its own fully equipped Theatre. It has a capacity of 280 and has been recently refurbished. Apart from its being an extremely effective teaching space, the theatre accommodates all the department’s major and small-scale productions and hosts a lively and varied programme of community and professional productions.
In the Upper School, Drama is taught as an option at GCSE. The Edexcel course is favoured, as the department believes that it strikes the right balance between theory and practice. The boys thoroughly enjoy their work and, as a result, are successful in this subject area.
In the Sixth Form the students are given the opportunity to extend their studies through AS and A level Drama and Theatre Studies. Again the Edexcel course is favoured as a natural progression from GCSE. Students also have the opportunity to study the International Baccalaureate Theatre course at Standard or Higher level.
