A Weekend of Hockey
A varied weekend of Hockey filled with interesting anecdotes that display the true spirit of sport at Bedford School.
The obvious headline is the 1st XI's confident victory. A 'salvo' of two strikes from skipper Phil Salvesen and two more for the in-form Petzinka gave the game a comfortable appearance of 5-0 against a weak Rugby 1st XI.
However, it was in the smaller details that the matches were significant. A GK crisis in the senior sides (Oli Thomas broke his collar bone for the 2nds) could have been disastrous had it not been for two men who answered when their School called. Edward Noel turned his back on his regular games and put on the kit for the 4th XI for the first time in 4 years. His actions were inspirational and they won 5-2 in a cracking match.
Will Leverett, flushed with victory in the 1st XI, manfully kitted up for the 2nds and played two games back-to-back. He was also voted Man of the Match in absentia by the 1st XI at match tea.
The U15A played well to win their first match of the season and the U16Bs 'played like heroes' according to Miss Evans, in a well-fought draw. Lastly, the young McCracken slotted two goals home for a stunning U14D team victory.
A mention in despatches must also go to the School Chaplain for coaching the U15C team at short notice. Staff and students showing their commitment to the colours alike!
Overall, 5 victories, 4 defeats and 4 draws gave the block to Bedford by a small margin.
