Since the introduction of Chemistry and Mechanical Sciences by Head Master James Surtees Phillpotts in 1875, the Sciences have been at the very core of a Bedford School education.

Today, the school continues this tradition, with approximately 63% of all Sixth Formers studying at least one Science subject, so the need for first class facilities for teaching and learning is vital.

Begun in September 2013 and phased over three years, we are delighted to announce that the development has now been completed. This project has seen twelve laboratories and classrooms within the Science Department refurbished and modernised to create a superior learning environment.

The Opening

Lord Professor Robert Winston officially opened Bedford School’s refurbished Science laboratories before giving a lecture to over 370 local pupils on Monday 25 April 2016.

During a fortunate and timely respite from the rain, boys, staff and guests joined the professor, medical doctor, scientist, television presenter and politician, Lord Winston at the ceremony to officially open the school’s newly-upgraded science laboratories.

The refurbishment project, which was funded by the Bedford School Foundation, the Bedford School Trust, a number of individual donors and the generous legacy from late Old Bedfordian Brian Saville (40-48), took place over the summers of 2014 and 2015.

Lord Winston met with boys and saw first-hand the twelve refurbished and modernised laboratories and classrooms during a tour of the upgraded facility that houses the schools’ Biology, Chemistry and Physics departments.

Lord Winston then took to the stage in the Great Hall to deliver a lecture on ‘Beginnings of Life’ to over 500 guests, including over 370 pupils from twelve local upper schools.

Head Master, James Hodgson, said, “Over a third of Bedford School’s leavers this year will do something science-related at a top university and very many Old Bedfordians have stayed in scientific research or joined other science-related careers after gaining inspiration from their time here; we are delighted with our new facilities and most grateful to Lord Winston for sharing our opening day with us as we continue to inspire the next generation.”
