We are dedicated to offering the highest standard of pastoral care to each and every boy in our care. We understand that in order to thrive and succeed academically, students need to feel supported and encouraged.
In line with our boarding ethos, our houses are at heart of our pastoral care system. Providing a sense of belonging to every boy, whether a day boy or boarder, the houses contribute greatly to the much admired, friendly family feel that is evident throughout the School.
We have six day houses and six boarding houses in the Upper School. Within each house, every boy is assigned a Housemaster and a personal Tutor, whose common goal is to ensure his life at Bedford is a happy and successful one. Each day house is twinned with a boarding house to ensure that boys are involved in every area of school life. Together, the twinned houses regularly take part in activities together, such as singing, drama and inter-house sports competitions.
Vertical tutor groups
We operate a vertical tutorial structure, which allows new students to develop alongside boys further along in their educational journey. Acting as role models, the older students adopt positions of responsibility and help the younger boys learn and thrive.
Every boy's tutor will remain the same throughout his time at the school, which allows them to get to know each other well and build a high degree of trust. His tutor will follow his academic progress closely, and in partnership with parents, provide direct and individual support and guidance.
All our members of staff recognise the importance of pastoral care and the vital role that they play in the lives of our students. They work hard to build strong and lasting relationships with the students in their care, throughout their time at Bedford. They are always available to support each boy and their family. Boys can also seek help and advice from the school’s doctors, medical team, counsellor or chaplain.
We work hard to forge strong partnerships with our boys’ families. Our parent portal allows every parent or guardian to securely log in to their son's school record and view up-to-date information on things like reports, grades, conduct merits and warnings.
Citizenship, Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) and weekly assemblies establish the ethos, values and expectations of the school. They also provide the boys with a strong ethical framework to guide them during their time at Bedford and beyond.
